A simple guide to IaaS, PaaS and SaaS – and how to use them

Using a cloud-based CRM will save on your on-premises IT needsoffer you greater flexibility and heightened security – as well as being cost-effective. 

IaaS, PaaS and SaaS are the fundamentals of cloud terminology, so here is a quick overview of what they mean: 

Iaas means

Infrastructure as a Servicesimply meaning moving all your infrastructure to be cloud-based. You won’t need an on-site server at all, making it perfect for all sized companies; and you’ll have the added benefit of it being able to add additional services based on storage and CPM usage as your company grows. 


PaaS means

Platform as a Service and is the virtual hardware and software. By hardware I mean the platform replicates a server, and the software is the programs you will need to create documents.  

Paas benefits from: 

  • Enhanced security 
  • Drip-fed updates, so no downtime 


With cloud servers spanning the world, you have control over where your platform is hosted, ensuring your systems and data remain onshore at all times. We talk more about GDPR and Security in some of our earlier blog posts. 

PaaS can be developed or configured 

You have two options with virtual hardware – develop or configure. A developer will write all the code to create your virtual server, however, you are then tied to the developer for updates and any tweaks. This is costlywhich is why developed platforms are mostly deployed by Enterprise level companies.  

Configuration however is cheaper and will not affect your virtual hardware, as it sits within it and benefits from the updates from the platform itself. So, for example, Inturi will configure your platformbut Microsoft will schedule the updates directly to you. Because of this, you are not tied to one person or company to keep you online, so if you are unhappy or the consultancy fees are too high you can shop around 

PaaS for streamlining and Apps

SaaS means – in simple terms, the software. Gone are the days where you would have to install it on every machine! 

With your programs being cloud-based rather than installed, file sharing is enabled reducing the necessity for email streams. You can simply send a link to document for colleagues to work on it, therefore there is only one document in circulation – duplication of work is irradicated. 

SaaS access can be from any machine or device and disaster recovery is a standard part of D365 meaning your data is always backed up and secure along with the benefits from manageable pay-as-you-go options. 


Benefits of using Dynamics 365 cloud-based platform
